The Lake District 2025

Rydal cottage in Bowness-on-Windermere. Arriving Friday to some dodgy looking weather we suffered a Saturday of rain – all but a remarkable dry 08.30 to 10.15 for Rothay Park parkrun – then were rewarded by a Sunday through to the following Friday of wall-to-wall sunshine.

  • Sunday walk above Bowness to 5* views from Brant Fell, School Knott and Biskey Howe. Meeting with the cyclists for Sunday roast at the Westmorland Inn

Glorious Sunshine Day 1 of 5. Super

  • Monday car ferry to a two part lakeside walk via Wray Castle then to Ambleside, buzzed by some F15s, and back by the 559 open top bus

  • Tuesday bus to Grasmere, Allan Bank visit although no red squirrels to be seen…

  • …and a pleasant flat walk around the lake and a bus back. We took on Jeanette and Tom at the Windermere Tennis Club – they couldn’t believe their luck, but we can blame it on the low sun and their local knowledge
  • Wednesday over Kirkstone pass to a walk to Aira Force Waterfall by Ullswater
  • Thursday walk to Beatrix Potter’s house at Hill Top …
  • …taking in Claife Viewing Station with a launch back to Bowness pier from Ash Landing. Catch up with the LSBP run club in ‘The Hole in t’Wall‘ ale house with Nathan
