The Roman Catholic primary school a little walk from home on Edwards Street, run by sisters Peter (headmistress I think), Mary, Rita and Sister Ignatius. Thyey lived in the convent attached to St Mary’s church, designed by Augustus Pugin who also designed the Westminster Houses of Parliament. Well, that’s how it worked. I do remember fondly Mr Fitzgerald – Irish I don’t wonder? The nuns were strict and constantly reminded us of the catechism, but they weren’t nasty or truly bullying, although I think there was a time when the whole class got the ruler from some misbehaviour. Ruler? pah, we were cleare not to be messed with 🙂

For some reason we were taken to Ireland, staying near Dalkey at the Colliemore Hotel, with some going by ferry, a lucky few flew. Included a first trip to Powerscour gardens and Glendalough, next visited in 2018 or maybe a tad before on a visit to Dublin.

This is where we stayed for sure remembering it had an outdoor pool with Sister Ignatius going for a swim – what nuns seen without their habits. Gosh
Amongst the treats was the annual Cadbury competetion where we had to write up about chocolate, where it came from etc. more lucky winners got a certificate 1968, aged 10 then and a tin of chocolates. Wonderful. Why does the internet come up with nothing/rubbish when you want to be reminded of the tin?

We played football a walk away at Parker’s Piece just before getting to Chester Green. No cheeky little boys there? At least not as dressed for the May procession. I think the outfit must have been the right size for 2 years running.

Having taken the 11+ exam off we went to the local grammar school, Bemrose
