Ireland 2022

.

Rough enough for Stena to cancel our ferry sailing so headed out a day late to Dungarvan with G&N for Rachel’s “party plus weekend”.

With airbnb looking out over the bay, we managed a Saturday evening of merriment in Merry’s, with a bit of fun and a sea swim on Sunday followed by a walk along the Cunnigar, and a trip to St Declan’s Rock at Ardmore. It must have been Saturday evening dinner with friends at “The Moorings” (but not in the gazayboh [sic]), but we did find time to check out “The Local” at some point. All this before the main event at Mount Juliet on Monday (Diwali as it happens).

After an early morning circuit/run of the golf course, breakfast, then watching the solar eclipse on Tuesday drove back via Kilkenny for a quick look around the riverside, castle & high street for a final night in Dungarvan along the Gold/Copper Coast stopping at the damp and blowy Tramore Beach, Annestown Beach and Kilmurrin Cove. Arriving at the Park Hotel with any number of others staying for a final late afternoon Guinness we struggled to get served, but then there was a wake going on. Wednesday morning cleared the heads with a walk across the estuary in Dungarvan and coffee in the square before moving on to characterful airbnb in Kinsale via the “Titanic Experience” in Cobh. Thursday saw an epic walk out and back to Kinsale calling in at the interesting Charles Fort for a guided tour. Friday’s road trip via Kinsale Head and the Lusitania memorial saw us enjoy a lunchtime walk along the estuary from Timoleague to look for Black Tailed Godwits, before exploring the high street at Clonakilty with a mandatory Hardy coffee stop and the exceptional Inchydoney beach. On Saturday we enjoyed the hospitality of the Cork Tramore valley parkrun – they start at 09:30 over here, but the extra 30 minutes in bed didn’t help Noel’s parkrun demeanour any great deal. “Up Cork”

On our return route we visited the Mahon Falls, with Sunday walk around Waterford before a final evening meal at a plain but quite adequate hotel 5 minutes drive from the ferry in Liskeard.
