Never say never, and with a whole hostel and roads closed to traffic because of the fire risk plus the need to nurse injuries this wasn’t necessarily an ideal escapade celebrating 70th birthdays. The use of public transport for our journey allowed us to sample the delights of the Heart of Wales line. No doubt the journey and scenery were a treat, as were the pork pies & quiches supplied by the catering attendants, but it was a FOUR hour journey from Swansea to Church Stretton.

Completing the 8 mile trek over and round the Long Mynd the possibility that our on-line Morrisons food order may have been missed or was sitting cooking in a porch in the warm sun waiting for our arrival just after 6pm was a nagging doubt. But no, warden Paul did us proud and was indeed rewarded by a substitute (it’s an on-line thing) Lindt selection box. Great work making sure we had the right bunks, although spreading out with one person per dormitory would have been most welcome.

It was a truly hot 3 days, but we enjoyed the Stiperstones (rhymes with Viper) and the delightful volunteer run Bog Centre, and only over-catered by a can of Heinz baked beans, Noel’s Granola & Yogurt, and the third can of Tuna. Kittysplit.com again did a good job and ‘Little Al and his red Motoguzzi regaled us with many anecdotes including his proposed Channel to Med trip with his brother. Great work & more to look forward to on a further adventure, maybe as a support team for Al. Who knows?
