July 24 Somerset

With a stay at the Cotley Inn. Much more a food pub than anything, with the double chocolate mousse the best dessert I’ve ever come across, yet they were obliged to show the Euro semi-final. Tricky access to get to the pub along a number of narrow be-hedged blind corners from the Chard to Ilminster road, but worth a visit. Indeed as were stop overs and homage to St Aldhelm at Sherborne and Seatown on the way there.

A 6 mile morning Brompton cycle ride along the slightly overgrown cycle track “Stop Way Line” was good enough and not too far to test a twisted ankle and an afternoon by the seaside sheltering from marauding seagulls in Lyme Regis. Yes, we had stayed here before at the Old Monmouth cottage.

The return journey saw a 40 minute race through the remarkable Wells Cathedral, although Basil the cathedral cat was missing.

Not unlike Hodge at Southwark Cathedral, although taking a swipe at an Italian tourist that morning was maybe an un-Christian thing to do.
