To avoid ambiguity use: field of play; caution; goal area etc. We like ‘cutting the grass’

Post match de-brief – be aware a referee may challenge what you say against what you are going to write, so don’t give away superlatives. Remember this is feedback, so start with positives and reinforce good performance. Focus on how to improve, not on previous mistakes, support with facts & observations, use ‘we’ to stress teamwork, be candid and fair but avoid confrontation, ask questions & listen. Identify/go with “Key Match Incidents”, the rest are unlikely to need discussion.

Look for positioning and distance for angle of view, but keep solution focused.

De-brief Structure
1.Agree the time & place for the debrief, be sure to allow a few minutes for cooling off
2Give yourself time to prepare and take notes
3Keep it short with bullet points
4Be factual; time, confirm discipline actions, discuss key match incidents – goals, penalties etc; look for clarification

If you these utilise checklists as you go, you should have everything to comment on…
