2017 Camping

Going Camping at Hopley’s family campsite above Bewdley whilst some friends decide they’re better off in B&B. With a canoe trip down the river Severn from Bridgnorth to Arley and a return by Steam train at £33 beckoning, the alternative for non water babes is a cycle tour with (or temporarily without) panier bags.

Where Birmingham comes to play on the banks of the Severn and the funparks of Stourport provide the playground for the good folk of England’s second city (sorry Manchester)

We begin with a barbecue on the Paddock of a busy campsite. You’re not allowed to book groups or something like that, but it would appear it’s easy to get around that and anyway campsite etiquette in this part of the world seems to be play music as loud as you want because you like it, as long as you keep your dogs in cage. To be fair it’s a lovely part of the country and most folks are fine, but then it is a campsite, and we understand why some colleagues chose the luxury option.

If it’s camping it must mean rain. Whilst the plucky paddlers manage avoid the froecast Saturday precipitation, the pensive pedlers get caught in a prolonged downpour either side of some agreeable weather. They don’t meet until the end of the day, but we do get to experience the railway halt cafe and the mining visitor centre.

The following day is a delightful walk along the banks of the Severn from Stourport and the Treasure Island fun fair.
